The STAR method for interview answers

The STAR method is a four-part structure for answering behavioural ("tell me about a time...") questions: Situation, Task, Action, Result. It keeps your answer clear and proves the outcome — spend most of your time on the Action, and always finish with a concrete Result.

What STAR stands for

  • Situation — set the scene in a sentence or two.
  • Task — what you were responsible for.
  • Action — what you did (the bulk of the answer).
  • Result — the outcome, ideally with a number.

Example answer

Situation: "Our biggest client was about to churn after a botched delivery. Task: I was asked to save the account. Action: I set up a daily check-in, rebuilt the project plan, and personally owned the three fixes that mattered most. Result: They renewed for another year and grew their contract by 20%."

Tips that make STAR work

  • Say "I", not "we" — they are assessing you.
  • Quantify the result wherever you can.
  • Keep Situation short; spend the time on Action.
  • Prepare 5-6 stories that can flex to many questions.
